Working in a Prison (a poem by Gary Bingham) Surrounded by people who are convicted criminals Working with professional staff who are skilled working with deviant criminals. Environment of elaborate time schedules that are rigidly followed with bells, whistles, and horns echoing Being constantly pressured by inmates to obtain more than they are allowed Understanding inmate values of kindness being interpreted as “weakness”. Feeling the potential for violence Sensing the requirement to be always aware of the surroundings Understanding the importance of reading body language, facial expressions for safety. When leaving the work environment , needing an unwinding time. To avoid self-drugging, the need to participate in hobbies, activities. The necessity of separating work from home life for the benefit of loved ones Importance of associating with those that are not connected to prison work Intellectual fight to not incorporate values related to the prison culture.

A Poem by Gary Bingham Being a U.S. Army Commissioned Officer: Infantry, Military Intelligence, Military Police Branches In combat, willing to advance in the field under enemy fire and engage the enemy, facing the possibility of certain death. Making instant decisions under stress, chaotic conditions. Ignoring personal injuries in accomplishing the military mission. Striving for ethical behavior for myself and others Being strong both in temperament, and constitutionally Faithful adherence to achieving the organizations mission Actively supervising, checking on the people in my unit Effectively communicating the needs of the organization Adjusting work requirements as needed Constant study to be technically and tactically correct in my behavior Presenting an image that others are willing to follow. Enjoying the structure of military formations, drill and ceremonies, pomp and circumstances Leading to discipline under battle conditions Relishing earning metals, promotions and meeting the required standards Bearing the sacrifice of a seven day a week, 24 hour a day job Noticing details which are important to achieve military objectives, save lives The Army model “being lean and mean”. Surviving under battle conditions for days, weeks, months Innovate, adapt, overcome in achieving objectives Avoiding stupid career ending actions

Mount Franklin State Park Day Trip

Wednesday we went on a small hike in Franklin Mountains State Park. Our plan was to hike to a cave on the side of the mountain. Per the instructions a short hike. The path was filled with very large jaked rocks that were dangerous to walk on for people in their 70s so we turned back. It was nice out of the house COVID activity any way even though we did not make it to the caves. This part of the mountain is visible from our house. Gary
